The Lockyer & Bown families we are concerned with here are both branches of the families that came from Middlezoy, nr Bridgwater, Somerset, UK.

George Lockyer (b1817) married Jane Kick (b1820) in 1849.

In 1851(census) George 33, was a farmer in Middlezoy, with 18 acres

In 1861(census) George 43, was a farmer in Middlezoy, with 25 acres and 1 labourer.

They had a least seven children, William Field (b1849), Eliza Jane (b1852), a boy Obededom, baptised on Jan 20^th 1856(as was Eliza Jane). He died age 1 in Jan 1857, Frank James (b1854), Marianna (b1858- d 1872 age14), Richard Field (b1860), Margaret Letitia 1864 (from 1881 census)

William Field Lockyer (b1849), and then Richard Field Lockyer (b1860), brothers of Eliza Jane, emigrated to Illinois, during 1870-80.

William Field was b 12^th Dec 1849 Middlezoy( baptised 21^st Jan 1850) and died Apr 2, 1917 in Hornsby, Illinois. He emigrated in 1872 on the ship ‘France’, from Liverpool to New York (via Queenstown Ireland), arriving Aug 23^rd.

In the 1880 census he was residing in Polk Township, Macoupin County, with wife Jennie or Jane Reader who he married in Macoupin County on Sept 14^th 1879. She was 26 and had been born in England, therefore in 1854. He described himself as a farmer aged 28, she was ‘keeping house’.

In the 1910 census Jennie (Jane) declared that she had emigrated from England in 1873, and William born Dec 1849 had been married to his wife for 31yrs. Jane died 31^st Oct 1940, Montgomery, Litchfield.

According to a reply on the Illinois Ancestry message board (300506 from M.D?) the 1910 census also lists 4 of their 6 children (all still living) , Walter F, Lillie M, Charles, and Ollen (Ellen?).

What info has this given us… In 1919 Walter F Lockyer b 1884, was a tenant farmer of 185 acres, belonging to Mrs CW Stiver, at Hornsby, Rural route 11in Cahokia township, Sec3. His mother Jane Reader Lockyer, and neice Fern Lockyer (Luscious Lockyer’s daughter) were with him. We know that William Field his father, had died in 1917.

Eliza Jane b c 1852 Middlezoy (baptised 20^th Jan 1856), married Walter Bown b1843. 1852 birth from census, marriage and age at death, seems to be at odds with baptism on 20th Jan 1856. On free bmd there is an entry for an Eliza Jane Lockyer born Sept qtr 1851, Bridgwater dist, Vol 10, p339.

Richard Field b 22^nd July1860 Middlezoy, died 12^th Dec 1935, Shipman, Macoupin County, Illinois

In 1884 a Richard Lockyer emigrated on the ship Wisconsin from Liverpool to New York arriving on Oct 9^th.

In the 1900 census he was recorded though as having emigrated in 1882 not 1884, was born in England, had been married 11 years to his wife Emma Reader whom he had married on Oct 23^rd 1888 at Macoupin County, recorded their son Roy and daughter Beatrice. Emma died 22^nd Sept 1932, Shipman, Macoupin.

The Directory below mentions a son Earnest, and a son Roy (*=not at home)

What info has this given us. In 1919 Richard Field Lockyer(who became resident in that county in 1888) owned 53 acres at Shipman Rural route21, Shipman township Sec13. His wife Emma Reader, and son Earnest were with him, but son Roy was not at home.

Albert Bown (b1872), Eliza Jane’s son, also emigrated to Illinois, USA late in the 1880's, and was thought to have initially stayed with his Uncle, Richard Field Lockyer. (Albert's mother was Eliza Jane Lockyer (b1852), who married Walter Bown (b1843)
