Annie’s father Joseph Callow, was an agricultural labourer all his life, working for an undetermined period at Hoopers Elm Farm, on the Burrowbridge to Westonzoyland road. They lived in a thatched cottage down the lane past Hoopers Farm, leading to Damas Drove, which turned left just after the cottage and then on to Thorngrove. Turning right after the cottage led to Willake Drove, and on to Thorngrove. The cottage was on the left side of the road, at the far end of a long sliver of land adjoining field OS 549.
Joseph, b Aug 21st 1853, was the third son of James & Mary Callow(nee Peppard) from Greinton. Mary Callow died Oct 1st 1854.
Annie’s mother Elizabeth Callow
(nee Hurd),
died when she was only about two (around 1883?), and her father subsequently
remarried. According to the 1881 census,
Annie, at some point after marrying James, was working as a cook to the vicar at the vicarage.
Moorland House, on the riverside road to Burrowbridge, was the family home of the Hurd's(or Heards?). Annie’s mother's family lived there, and Doris Bown often visited to play on the tennis courts with the Hurds & Paynters. (George Paynter married an Ella Hurd).
