Annie’s father Joseph Callow, was an agricultural labourer all his life, working for an undetermined period at Hoopers Elm Farm, on the Burrowbridge to Westonzoyland road. They lived in a thatched cottage down the lane past Hoopers Farm, leading to Damas Drove, which turned left just after the cottage and then on to Thorngrove. Turning right after the cottage led to Willake Drove, and on to Thorngrove. The cottage was on the left side of the road, at the far end of a long sliver of land adjoining field OS 549.

Joseph, b Aug 21^st 1853, was the third son of James & Mary Callow(nee Peppard) from Greinton. Mary Callow died Oct 1^st 1854.

Annie’s mother Elizabeth Callow (nee Hurd), died when she was only about two (around 1883?), and her father subsequently remarried. According to the 1881 census, Elizabeth was born in High Ham around 1849/50.(she was noted as being 31 in the 1881 Middlezoy census). Joseph & Elizabeth were married in the Ebenezer chapel at Burrowbridge on 15^th May 1880. She was also noted as being 31 at that time and living at Nether Stowey! At some point the family lived in a thatched cottage at the rear of the car park at Greylake bridge. By that time Annie’s mother had died, and Joseph had subsequently remarried a blind lady called Caroline Hayman (nee Pine), a widow and launderess, from Burrowbridge, born 4^th June 1841 at Lyng.

Annie, at some point after marrying James, was working as a cook to the vicar at the vicarage.

Moorland House, on the riverside road to Burrowbridge, was the family home of the Hurd's(or Heards?). Annie’s mother's family lived there, and Doris Bown often visited to play on the tennis courts with the Hurds & Paynters. (George Paynter married an Ella Hurd).

From a copy of this certificate we get the following information; Joseph (aged 26), a labourer, was living in Moorland, North Petherton district. Josephs father was James Callow, a labourer. Elizabeth (aged 31), no occupation stated, was living in Nether Stowey. Elizabeths father was George Hurd, a labourer. The marriage on 15^th May 1880, was at the Ebenezer Chapel at Burrowbridge, ‘According to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Baptists’. Witnesses were, Samuel Burnett and Frances Smith. It is also interesting to note that the name Hurd was first spelt as Heard on the certificate, and then crossed out and corrected to Hurd, probably spotted by Elizabeth when she was about to sign at the bottom.
